Black is the Color - Trad/Koppin TTBB
John Jacob Niles is known for his extensive exploration of Appalachian folk music. Because of his imprint on the culture of folk music, I felt the need to write something that was delicate and foreboding, yet maintained the raw emotion that is unique to all folk music. As these beautiful words unravel, this choral setting takes on different characteristics that all seek to reinforce what it is that Niles has already transcribed.
This piece is forward-driving allowing both the choir and pianist to communicate the drama. As voices break off into pairs and eventually four-parts, the text should remain its primary importance. Phrases may be shaped by exploring dynamic variation especially on the held notes.
